Southampton Philharmonic Choir Southampton University Phil New London Sinfonia David Gibson (conductor) Erica Eloff - soprano Simon Thorpe - baritone Haydn - Insanae et vanae curae Schubert - Unfinished Symphony Brahms - Ein deutsches Requiem Saturday 21st November 2009, 7.30pm Winchester Cathedral Haydn’s motet Insanae et vanae curae - frenzied and vain cares - is Southampton Philharmonic Choir’s short contribution to the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. It is one of Haydn’s most powerful pieces, being adapted from the storm chorus of an existing oratorio. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony (or Symphony No 8 in B minor) will give our professional orchestra, the New London Sinfonia, a chance to shine. The piece has strongly contrasting sections - sometimes soft and lyrical, sometimes fierce and turbulent. Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, the main work in this concert, was described by the composer as a “human requiem” of mourning and consolation for the living. The German text was chosen by Brahms from the Lutheran Bible. The work was the composer’s response to the death of his mother and perhaps also to the death some years earlier of his great friend and mentor, Schumann. The music ranges from sad and reflective to triumphant. The soprano soloist will be Erica Eloff, who many will remember for her stunning performance in the title role of Handel’s oratorio Theodora at Southampton Guildhall last year, also with Southampton Philharmonic Choir. Erica won the 2008 London Handel Festival Singing Competition, and has gone on to become a star of this year’s festival. The baritone soloist will be Simon Thorpe, who has just finished a run of Rigoletto in Bristol and is due to appear with Welsh National Opera in the New Year.
