Grieg – Peer Gynt, with Narrator, Samuel West; Mendelssohn – Hebrides Overture (Fingal's Cave); Delius – Songs of Farewell

Saturday 27 November 2010 Southampton Guildhall, 7.30pm Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture (Fingal's Cave) Delius - Songs of Farewell Grieg - Incidental music to Peer Gynt Southampton Philharmonic Choir Southampton University Phil New London Sinfonia Conductor David Gibson Narrator Samuel West Soloists Richard Morris (Peer Gynt); Ruby Hughes (Solveig); Niamh Kelly (Anitra); Clare Salaman (Hardanger fiddle).
This concert, continuing our 150th Anniversary Year celebrations, also marks David Gibson’s 20th anniversary as our Musical Director. The main work will be Grieg’s complete incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. The score includes the well-loved tunes from the orchestral suites - tunes such as Morning Mood, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King. The complete score was largely forgotten until being rediscovered in Bergen in the 1980s. There was a semi-staged performance, sung in Norwegian, at the Proms in 2001. We have commissioned an English libretto from Beryl Foster, an established librettist, a recognised authority on Grieg, and Vice-President of the International Grieg Society. Our narrator is the acclaimed actor and director, Samuel West.
